Hazardous wastes are those that may contain toxic substances generated from industrial, hospital, some types of household wastes. These wastes could be corrosive, inflammable, explosive, or react when exposed to other materials.

The hazardous waste can be defined by certain parameters like reactivity, toxicity, and ignitability. Examples of some hazardous wastes are obsolete computer equipment, pharmaceuticals, solvent-based paints, pesticides, batteries, motor oils, oily rags etc. When the hazardous waste doesn’t get disposed of in a proper manner, it may poison the groundwater, pollute the air & water, and affect the soil. Illegal disposal or dumping of waste is a serious offense.

This is harmful for the environment as it results in carbon dioxide and other harmful gases being released into the earth's atmosphere which then contribute to climate change.

Hazardous waste can be treated by the thermal method of high temperature incineration. This detoxifies certain organic wastes and destroys them.

Complete destruction of dioxins and furans and their chemical "building blocks" in waste material during combustion. This is achieved through the "3-T Rule":

High combustion Temperature to maximize waste destruction Adequate combustion Time (usually two seconds) to maximize waste destruction;

And High combustion Turbulence to distribute heat evenly and ensure complete waste destruction.

Prevention of conditions that favor formation of dioxins and furans immediately following combustion. This is achieved by the following design specifications:

Use a "fast-quench" of post-combustion gases by cooling them quickly from higher temperatures through the temperature range of approximately 400°C down to 250°C, to avoid prolonged exposure in the temperature range known to favor dioxin and furan formation; and Minimize the presence of certain metals, such as copper, on particulate matter, that are known to facilitate dioxin and furan formation

Dioxins, as most of complex organic molecules, adsorb partly or completely on certain porous surfaces, like (sintered) dust particulates, entrained in the flue gases or more specifically on adsorbants,of which the best known (and most used),is activated carbon.

  • Optimization of combustion control to achieve better burn out and hence to reduce content of PICS in raw gas, in the fly ashes and deposits inside the Incinerator
